Jisoo Seo (b.1996) in Seoul, South Korea holds a MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts and a BA in Textile Design. Based on the affection about the declining scenes and the ethical deficiency produced by the objects in digital ideology, Seo cherishes problem awareness about the social phenomenon and system provoked by technology.

Artist Statement

Base on the affection about the declining scenes and the ethical deficiency produced by the objects in digital ideology, I cherish problem awareness about the social phenomenon and system provoked by technology.

A German philosopher named Byung-Chul Han stated in his book ‘Psychopolitics’ that ‘neo-liberalism and new technologies detect humans and consider humans as the targets of exploitation. ‘Technologies of power of the neo-liberalism system adopt a delicate form. This does not subjugate individuals directly. Instead, it induces individuals to transcribe the dominant relationship internally through autonomous self control. Each individual interprets the dominant relationship that is deeply rooted within as freedom. Here, self-optimization, obedience, and exploitation of freedom form a whole'(p.45). Han claims that the internal anger in human form results from spontaneous exposure instead of violence.

The images and contexts that are processed by contemporary ‘digital text’ media are sliced off like meat that is slaughtered in a slaughter house and only leaves tender flesh. The original nature of the incidents and objects is lost, and the processed flesh that remains passes through conveyance, followed by distortion. Without any distinction of the source and free will, the way of the world is filled with images that are wasted as nothing, affirming violence and prompting ruins. In the end, we may be illiterate in a hightech world, tamed by convenience as if we are tended by technology.

With this awareness, I am exploring the properties of the digital society and the sustainability of paintings through print media like images and texts. On the basis of my interest about artificialness and derangement, I am focusing on the possibility of a form that can be searched through the integration and juxtaposition between various materials that can be attained with printing technique and industrial products. This reflects on the criticism and skeptical views about the passive attitudes of mankind accepting the substitution of material into immaterial things due to the evolution of technology.
