Jisoo Jit Seo 서지수


Jisoo Jit Seo (b.1996, Seoul)  is a Korean visual artist and an art writer. She explores the relationship between post-humanism, neo-capitalism and the post-internet era. Based on her interest in technology and digital culture, Jit Seo aims to create a visual and auditory discourse about our lives and their impact on the world we live in through photography, sound and text.

Jit Seo holds a MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts, UAL and a BA in Textile Design. She is currently a PhD student of the Interdisciplinary Course for Studies of Art at Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Korea, Germany and the UK, among others. She received a grant from the Arts Council Korea in 2022 for her project, 'Softness: An Alternative Paradigm of Technology.‘

 Alternate Space Loop


Exhibition ‘Incomplete’ regards its significance on other outsiders intervening in the basic order established in a specific space and creating changeable situations. The forms that unfold, while the sharing of awareness and connectivity are excluded, are very different and it emphasizes and suggests dislocated practice. It was aimed to focus on the environment that was set up through failures in this performance, as the doer, and the open ending that could unfold within.

First of all, before conducting the performance, alcohol lamp, dry oil, and volatile oil were selected as the basic elements to compose the installation. This was because the functional context of the experimental nature and ignition quality of the alcohol lamp and the sustainability and combustibility of the oil were supposed as attractive elements. In each of the three alcohol lamps, the concentration of the dry oil and volatile oil were controlled and filled and the fragments of the object that proliferate like germs within were to be realized as inefficient forms. Basically, to light a fire, the function of the wick in the existing alcohol lamp is excluded and it gradually hardens under the formation of the film that is created by the oil. Then, it goes through the process of erosion along with the fragments.

Meanwhile, if an environment that can maintain the conditions like appropriate temperature and humidity required for the survival of this object cannot be created, then it leaves room for explosion due to the inbuilt inflammables. It means that the alcohol lamp that existed for ignition from the start is used for another intention. The intent was to search for an overlapping situation that could ascend to a high position with its essential functions or in a catastrophic form due to an unpredicted environment, although it was a situation that was regarded as failure from the beginning. In general, this imagination can be understood as a passive expression that is connected to the current situation and crisis of mankind.


전시 '미제' 는 특정 공간에 확립된 기본질서에 외부인이 개입해 변화무쌍한 상황을 조성하는 데 그 의의가 있다.인식의 공유가 배제된 채 펼쳐지는 형태는 매우 다르며 이는 탈구된 실천을 강조하고 시사한다. 실행자로서 이번 퍼포먼스에서는 애초부터 실패로 설정된 환경과 그 안에서 전개 가능한 열린 결말에 초점을 맞추는 것이 목적이었다.

우선 수행을 진행하기에 앞서 설치를 구성할 기본 요소로 알코올램프, 드라이오일, 휘발성유를 택했다. 알코올 램프의 실험 성격과 점화 기능, 기름의 가연성이 매력적인 요소로 여겨졌기 때문이다. 세 개의 알코올 램프 안에 건유와 휘발유의 농도를 조절하여 채우고 그 안에서 세균처럼 증식하는 물체의 분자들이 비효율적인 형태로 인식하도록 했다. 이 과정에서 불을 붙이기 위해 존재하던 램프 속 심지의 기능은 탈락되고 기름에 의해 만들어지는 막의 형성 아래 점차 굳어진다. 그리고 나서, 그것은 조각들과 함께 침식 과정을 거친다.

한편 이 오브제의 생존에 필요한 적정 온도와 습도 등 조건을 유지할 수 있는 환경이 조성되지 않으면 내장된 인화재로 인해 폭발을 할 수 있는 여지 또한 남겨진다. 태생부터 발화를 위해 존재했던 알코올램프가 다른 용도로 사용된 애초부터 실패로 간주되는 상황이었지만 예상치 못한 환경으로 인해 파국인 형태로 혹은 본래의 기능으로 돌아갈 수 있는 중첩적인 상황을 모색하자는 취지였다. 일반적으로 이러한 상상은 현재 인류의 상황과 위기와 연계되는 수동적인 표현으로 이해할 수 있다.
